How did you get introduced to Westeros? (11 posts)

I’m always interested how people came to this wonderful setting. During its initial release in 1996, the first novel “A Game of Thrones” flew under the radar for a bit. In 1997 it won the Nebula and World Fantasy Award, followed by the Locus Award in 1998 that it started to get some attention. Even with all this critical acclaim, it wasn’t until January of 2011 that it cracked the New York Times Bestseller’s List. It eventually reached #1 in July of that year.

So, now that I’ve had a nice long digression, how did you find Westeros? Was it through the books before they rose to fame? Was it through the HBO Television series? Was it something you just stumbled upon one day?

For me it was at the insistent pestering of a very dear friend, and to be honest I was very reluctant. I was young and very idealistic, and the book’s gritty, brutal potrayal of feudal life didn’t sit well with my rose-colored glasses. Now, almost fifteen years later, the glasses are a little bit tarnished and I’m a bit more worn by the years gone by. After watching a few episodes of the Television series “Game of Thrones”, I returned to the books and found out how fantastic they are.

    Now, what’s your story?

My big sister gave me my first copy of ‘A Game of Thrones’ when I was in high school (about eleven years ago now) and I’ve been hooked ever since. ‘ASoIaF’ is the first series that we’ve both read and enjoyed equally, though she has since moved on to living in the “real world” and I have not, at least not entirely. ;)

I’ll admit, I had never even HEARD of the books until A Game of Thrones on HBO was announced.

I saw that Sean Bean was playing another fantasy hero role, and I said “I’m on board!”

Been a fan (for better or worse, Lol) ever since!

My brother — knowing my obsession with all things sword and sorcery — insisted I watch the series on HBO with him since he had read the books. They’ve been on my “must read list” but…. it’s a long long list.

I’ve started the first book now, of course — I’m about two seasons behind in the reading but I think I might be able to catch up! :P

Good luck with that, Cray ;)

I’m doing the same thing, Cray. Half-way through Clash of Kings right now. Hoping to at least finish Storm of Swords by the time Season 3 comes around.

I’ve read through Book Four: “A Feast for Crows” but it’s been quite a while so I’m rereading from the beginning so I can read Book Five: “A Dance With Dragons” and have it make sense after my away. I’m still working my way through Book Two: “A Clash of Kings”. As for the TV series, I still need to catch up with the first season. We don’t have HBO so I have had to buy the DVDs in order to watch it. By the way, does anyone know when the complete second season set is coming out?

I heard great things about the show last summer but wanted to read the books first so I bought them all and just finished the fifth one about a month ago. I kept telling my brother and sister to read them too but they were intimidated by how long the series is, so when the DVDs came out I made them watch the first episode with me and they both immediately started reading the books and have been hooked ever since. They just finished the first book and can’t wait to get through the second so they can catch up to the tv show.

My father was given books 1-4 for Christmas this past year. I naturally took the first book right out from under his nose and had them all read by the end of winter break. Then I got book five on Nartha-.

It shames me to say that I hadn’t been aware of the series until the show came out. I watched the first episode and knew I had to read the books. I have been spending as much time in Westeros as I can ever since.
