GQB’s ’The Questcast’
Public Group active 2 months, 2 weeks agoThis is the official group for Grail Quest Books’ weekly live show, “The Questcast”, which takes place each Wednesday night from 8pm to 9:30pm EST.
This show will be discussing all of GQB’s publishing projects, but also (and especially!) the art of storytelling within the contexts of these various projects.
Since GQB’s projects range from novels to audio dramas to comic books, guests on the show will include many of the creatives that GQB works with to make their projects a reality: authors, artists, voice actors, music composers, sound engineers, graphic designers, video compositors, and more!
Discussion of these topics after the show, and questions from the show or for GQB in general, can be posted here

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 2 months, 4 weeks agoWe continue with “topic of the month” on Questcast for February: Romances… as in quests for sacred relics, songs for paladins, contentions with other-wordly challengers, waxing nostalgic for classical courts, and its modern re-envisioning through monsters and the macabre.
Last week we looked at one of the key attributes of knights errant,…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 3 months, 1 week agoThe “topic of the month” on Questcast for February will be: Romances… as in quests for sacred relics, songs for paladins, contentions with other-wordly challengers, waxing nostalgic for classical courts, and its re-envisioning through monsters and the macabre. GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 3 months, 3 weeks agoWe continue with ‘Tolkien Month’ by looking at one more selection from his famous “On Fairy Stories” essay. Here is the selection we will be discussing specifically tonight, which deals with the relationship (some would say adversaries) between fantasy and reason… :-)

Fantasy is a natural human activity.…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 4 months agoWe continue with ’Tolkien Month’ by looking at another selection from his famous ”On Fairy Stories” essay. Here is the selection we will be discussing specifically tonight, which deals with how story enriches our lives and the world around us, and also how stories can be a kind of risky adventure as they may reveal aspects of ourselves that we may…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 4 months, 1 week agoChildren are capable, of course, of literary belief, when the story-maker’s art is good enough to produce it. That state of mind has been called “willing suspension of disbelief.” But this does not seem to me a good description of what happens.
What really happens is that the story-maker proves a successful “sub-creator.” He makes a Secondary…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 5 months agoSpeaking of media bias: it was completely left out of tonight’s show that the TIME’s Person of the Year’s final selection is always made by the magazine’s editors and that the polling that was mentioned was merely done to see where the nominated people placed in the rankings. The Pakistani girl came in second to President Obama, by the way,…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 5 months, 3 weeks agoOn Questcast tonight we’re going to be talking about genres, sub-genres (more accurately “types”), and voices/narratives in story. There’s lots to cover and lots of room for discussion: As a reader what is your favorite type of story? As an author, what is the best type of story to write and which voice/narrative is the best to choose? Join us…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 6 months, 1 week agoQuestcast tonight is going to be starting a series on writingcraft and storycraft, and we’ll be using C.S. Lewis’s ”A Preface to Paradise Lost” as something of a textbook to guide the discussion.
First show will be about the importance of choosing the right form, genre, and voice of a story. GQB projects will be used as examples of this process,…[Read more]

GQB’s ’The Questcast’ 9 months, 2 weeks ago“Contrary to what writers learn in MFA programs, writing is not an easy profession, one in which a writer should be “encouraged.” Writing is hard work. Writers who want to put in the hours, who have a good work ethic, will survive in this profession while the “talented” will get eaten alive.
The university programs and that workshop attitude…[Read more]

We didn’t really have time to explore the point I was working towards unfortunately but I think this is an excellent example of it. One of the primary forms of “bias” in media is the fact that these subjects are so complex that BOOKS are written arguing single aspects of any given story. A news reporter has to compress this down using experts…[Read more]
